On Sunday, March 30th, I helped organize and run an event sponsored by CLAL on Jewish sexual ethics. It was entitled, "How and when to do what with whom". Approximately 40 students came representing a broad range of seminaries including HUC, JTS, YU, Drisha, RRC, YCT and the Advanced Talmud Program at Stern College. I blogged about it on my blog and can be found here.

Who said what about how and when to do what with whom? (3.00 / 1)

On your blog, you wrote:

Each intern was responsible for facilitating one of the smaller groups. The questions that were posed to each group for discussion ranged from: "Where do you draw your values from - halacha, modern values or a combination of both?" ... and "What does your denomination do best in regards to sexual ethics and what do you think it could improve upon?".

 So... what did people say?

Re: What did people say (3.00 / 1)

Hi Mik,

There was so many interesting and noteworthy discussions that transpired it is hard to recall them all in a short blog post or a comment thread. Two interesting observations that I made throughout the day though were:

 1. What separates many in the Conservative moment and many in the Orthodox movement has a lot to do with communal affiliations then it does with divergent understandings of the process of halakha.

2. The discussion for many turned to how the Orthodox community specifically addresses sexual ethics. This was all the more true for the non-Orthodox participants in the event. My theory for why this is so is that Orthodoxy is relatively new to the denominational spectrum and there is a genuine curiousness about both Orthodoxy's intentions vis-a-vie dialogue and how the Orthodox world, for so many years previously closed and insulated, operates.
