I've become very interested in the movements around green jobs and a green economy. This video is a (very) brief intro to Van's thinking; i'll review his book when i'm done reading it.  Curious to hear other recommended reading on the subject...

More reading for moore on green jobs and green economy... (0.00 / 0)

Strategies for the Green Economy - Jole Makower (great how-to-get there...)

Hot, flat and Crowded - Thomas Friedman (nothing to new here, but its what "everyone will read" so you might as well know the examples he uses...)

Plan B 3.0 - Lester Brown (a bit out-there for some - but gives a more holitic/historial overview along with adding the needed 911 aspect to all of this...)

Key note (hee hee) on Green Jobs and another book (0.00 / 0)

Thanks for the post. First - the other book you should read is Natural Capitalism by Amory Lovins and Paul Hawkin.

As a 5 year veteran of sustainable business issues, the last two in renewable energy, I'd like to offer a quick note on the advancement of this powerful idea, Green Collar Jobs.

The buzz word is great.  The diversity of the movement is heartening, and potentially powerful.  The focus on justice is crucial.  There is also quite a bit of substance to the claims of a transformative effects on our country.

However, the most important peice to making the kinds of sweeping changes that communities are clamoring for is federal legislation

Again and again our country has gotten beat to punch with developing green industry.  After originating the solar cell, we let the industry fall in a cloud of coal dust.  With the Saudi Arabia of Wind within our borders, we now find ourselves with foreign corporations (while having the best intentions, still export most of the moolah) running the wind business for the most part.  Germany, Japan, Spain, and, yes, China all have made much bigger strides to sustainability that the US. Did they wait for a big social movement to make changes?  Nope.  They just did it.

In summary, let's keep building the Green Collar movement.  But, if we really want to see sustainable economic development, the Feds have to step up. So call your representatives today and tell them to support renewable energy and other green industries!
