John Mayer is a famous musician. Here is one of his most popular romantic songs. Here’s his song about how everyone in "our generation" (whatever that means) are hopeless and waiting for someone else to do something. This song is literally an anti-anthem for any social change movement.
He’s also a known womanizer and “half” Jewish:
"PLAYBOY: Is your heritage Jewish?
MAYER: I’m half Jewish. People say, “Well, which side of your family is Jewish?” I say, “My dad’s.” And they always say it doesn’t count. But I will say I keep my pool at 92 degrees, so you do the math. I find myself relating to Judaism. One of my best friends is Jewish beyond all Jews—I went to my first Passover seder at his house—and I train in Krav Maga with a lot of Israelis." *this is from the newest Playboy magazine, but I'm not going to link to it. Besides wishing that he wasn’t any percent Jewish, his response makes me think about my reaction when people tell me they only have one Jewish parent. I know someone whose grandmother was born Jewish, converted to Catholicism and raised his mother as Catholic. He has no connection to Jewish community or activities. Is he “more” Jewish than someone who has only a Jewish dad, but participates in many aspects of organized Jewish life? Even though John Mayer is gross, it sucks that he’s spent his whole life telling people he’s Jewish to have them correct him, even though he feels a connection to Judaism.
How many John Mayers are Jews pushing away? Would John Mayer be less of a jerk if Jews would have accepted him? How many free concerts could we (Jews) be getting right now, if we would have let him hang out like fifteen years ago? |
