ALL TIME BEST: Social justice movies

It's starting to get cold and rainy here in New York. When it gets gross out, all I want to do is stay inside and watch movies. Sometimes I like movies about a white person who likes to dance and the black people that teach them the real meaning of love or whatever (like this one or this one or this one or this one).

But, sometimes, I get tired of deeply weird race relations and I prefer something about social justice.

Let's make a list of the ALL TIME BEST SOCIAL JUSTICE MOVIES! I'll start! (NOTE: Upon starting, I realized I don't know that many social justice movies, so help me make this list and give me some tips!)

1. Malcolm X

2.  When the Levees Broke

3. Maria Full of Grace

4. Bowling for Columbine

Matewan! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M...

it does have race relations as a major part of it, but it's also about workers' rights! and religion. i can honestly say i was inspired when the credits rolled.  "Matewan (1987) is an American drama film written and directed by John Sayles, illustrating the events of a coal mine-workers' strike and attempt to unionize in 1920 in Matewan, a small town in the hills of West Virginia."

hmm...

for a more messed-up one, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C...
Caché (2007) deals with being confronted by the legacy of class privilege in the context of a well-off white French liberal intellectual and the Algerian who was his parents' servant. not exactly inspiring or wholesome, more provocative.

so many goog SJ movies! (0.00 / 0)

All depends on how we define the categor(ies), some of mine:

Amistad, Amazing Grace

The Accused, Boys Don't Cry

Norma Rae

Social justice (0.00 / 1)
I guess we both have the same interest in watching movies relating to social justice. Social justice perhaps had been a critical issues in all countries, hence it is a serious thing for all of us. The movies that you listed above are just simply truthful and i may say it may possibly happen in the real world. Race discrimination can be related to this issue that have been an all time hotly debated topic, see, all this were happening and that I think those movies relating to them has something to teach or deliver certain moral lessons. Everybody should be open with this current issues and this movies are certainly is a good way to connect to others that are not so particular with it.

Labor movies, what about Jewish social justice movies, too? (0.00 / 0)

I can't help but think in categories about movies and books.  I'll go with labor movies, since I'm into those.

My favorites are:

Bread and Roses -janitor's union struggle in LA and a romance, made in 2000, very watchable

Salt of the Earth - about a miner's strike, creators of this movie were blacklisted during anti-communist, Hollywood witch hunts and the movie was banned, black and white

Norma Rae - labor, the south, and women building powe, totally watchable, too

How about Jewish social justice movies, like Trembling Before G-d.  Are there others?
